Amon, who is he?

Amon, the mysterious guy with the mask. Who is he? Why can he energy bend? He's surely something new, thats for sure! I found a theory online last night and I thought it made sense, so here it is!

What if Amon isn't an energy bender. What if he is absorbing bender's powers and is planing to use them to become like an anti-avatar. 

I know this sounds ludicrous, but think about it. When Amon took that fire bender's bending there was no release of energy like whne Aang took Ozai's bending. It looked like his bending got progressively weaker. It went from lightning to fire to nothing like it was being absorbed. So what if Amon was telling the truth. What if some evil spirit wants to take over the world and is using Amon as some sort of tool so that not even the avatar is powerful enough to stop him?
